Welcome to Bronx

The Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs, is the northernmost and the only one primarily located on the mainland. It spans 42 square miles and had a population of over 1.47 million as of the 2020 census, making it the fourth-largest borough by both area and population. It is bordered by Manhattan to the south and west, Westchester County to the north, Queens to the east, and the East River and Long Island Sound to the southeast.

The Bronx has a rich history, beginning with its name derived from Jonas Bronck, a Swedish settler who established the first European settlement there in 1639. It was annexed to New York City in stages during the late 19th century and became a separate county in 1914. The borough is known for its cultural contributions, including being the birthplace of hip-hop in the 1970s.

Geographically, it is divided by the Bronx River into a hillier western section and a flatter eastern section. About a quarter of its land is dedicated to open spaces like Pelham Bay Park (the city’s largest park), Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden, which features remnants of New York City’s original forest. The Bronx also houses Yankee Stadium, home to Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees.

Historically, it has been an immigrant hub, welcoming communities from Europe in the early 20th century and later from the Caribbean, Africa, and Latin America. While it faced economic decline and urban decay in the mid-20th century, particularly in areas like the South Bronx, it has experienced significant revitalization since the late 1980s. Today, it remains one of the most diverse parts of New York City.
