Welcome to Queens

Queens, New York, is the largest borough of New York City by area and the second-most populous, with a population of 2,405,464 as of the 2020 census. It is located on the western end of Long Island and is bordered by Brooklyn, Nassau County, and several maritime boundaries with other boroughs and New Jersey. Queens is renowned as the most ethnically and linguistically diverse urban area in the world, with nearly half of its residents being foreign-born.

The borough was established in 1683 and named after Catherine of Braganza, a Portuguese princess and Queen of England. It became part of Greater New York City in 1898 during the city’s consolidation. Historically, it transitioned from rural communities to a more urbanized area following infrastructure developments like the Queensboro Bridge in 1909.

Queens is home to key landmarks such as Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Citi Field (home to the New York Mets), and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where the U.S. Open is held. It also hosts two major airports—John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia—and has a diversified economy spanning healthcare, retail, manufacturing, transportation, and film production.

Culturally rich, Queens has been a hub for jazz music, with legends like Louis Armstrong residing there, and it played a significant role in hip hop’s development. It has also hosted two World’s Fairs and features attractions like MoMA PS1 and the American Museum of the Moving Image.
